Why it is needed?
Why it is needed? When you register a domain name, Namescout.com is required by the various registries to publish your contact information in what is called the 'whois database'. This database is often queried by organizations who wish to send you SPAM (Unsolicted bulk email). They gather up your email addresses and then begin sending you SPAM. They even will publish lists that contain all the addresses of domain holders to other SPAMers. Once they know your permanent email address, and it is on one of their lists, the SPAM is nearly impossible to stop.
What is Namescout.com's innovative Solution?
Referred to as 'Temporary Email' or 'Alias Email', our solution is fairly simple.

First, we assign you a temporary email address that is partly random and points to the Namescout.com mail forwarding server. An example of an address would be I-AAAA1234m3ea@usersa1.Namescout.com

Second, we publish this temporary email address for you in the whois servers. Anyone looking up your domain will see this address as a means to contact you.

Third, we forward all email that arrives at this temporary email address to you at your permanent email address that only we know (and is no longer published publicly).

Fourth, your temporary email address changes on a predefined period of time, once a month or once every 3 months (you select). You are assigned a brand new temporary email address when the old one expires.
The effect of this, is that anyone looking up your domain name is still able to contact you, by emailing your temporary email address, but they never know your real email address. Once this temporary address has expired, they must use the new temporary email address to reach you (which they can find out by querying the whois service again).
You are always reachable through this method. The advantage is that SPAMers will no longer be able to publish lists of email addresses that are meaningful. An address they had for you last month will no longer be any good to them.
What does it cost?
Absolutely nothing. This is a free service Namescout.com has implemented in an effort to help our clients cut down on unwanted email traffic.
Your privacy online is all to often violated. Namescout.com believes in your right to privacy and has implemented this service for you.
This service is only available at Namescout.com for domains registered through Namescout.com, or transferred to Namescout.com. Should you wish to transfer your domain from a different registrar to take advantage of this new privacy feature, please contact our customer service department.
How do I turn it on?
When you signup for a new account, you will see an option that allows you to turn it off. By default, the enhanced privacy feature is turned on.
Any new domains you register will have this privacy enabled.
Should you not wish to use our new privacy protection, you can turn it off at any time through our account administration screens.
You also control the options for it through these same screens. You can select what time period you desire for your temporary email address to expire.
Can I manually chose to assign myself a new temporary email address?
Yes. If at any time you feel you are getting too much junk email through your temporary email address, you can manually reset it to a new one. This is done through the control panel in our account administration section of our website.
I am already getting tons of junk. Will this help me?
Once you are on a SPAMers list and your permanent email address is know to them, it is hard (next to impossible) to remove it from their lists. Namescout.com's new privacy functions will not remove you from the SPAMers list, but it will help you from getting on it in the first place.
From this point forward, your real, permanent email address will not be discoverable by SPAMers simply by mining the entire whois database.
Over time, your real email address will be on fewer and fewer lists, and the flow of junk will diminish.
Does Namescout.com filter out SPAM going to the temporary email address?
No. Namescout.com passes every message we receive through to your real email address.
We have been asked by many of our clients if filtering is possible to help reduce the flow of SPAM. We are investigating ways of filtering what passes through to you, and will notify you of our progress in this area. This would only be done as an additional (and free) feature that you would have to enable manually in the future.
As your temporary email address is only valid for a short period of time, the simple fact that it changes occasionally will drastically reduce the amount of junk email you receive.
